Marine Military Academy Embraces Smart Grid Technology To Help Keep Texas Grid Stable

Vedero Software and Cirro Energy Services have teamed to provide the Marine Military Academy with an automated approach to reduce energy usage during emergency events on the Texas electric grid. This results in economic benefits to the Military Marine Academy and reliability benefits to the Texas electric grid during power shortages.
Marine Military Academy, a private college preparatory military school for young men, will participate in demand response programs at the institution’s Harlingen, Texas campus. For example, the Marine Military Academy participated in Cirro Energy Services’s proprietary 4CP (“Four Coincidental Peak”) price response program for several months this summer and was able to successfully curtail more than 30% of the campus’s aggregated load from 17 buildings to avoid critical peak electricity costs during record summer temperatures. In early 2011, the Marine Military Academy plans on participating in the ERCOT Emergency Interruptible Load Service (EILS) program and will automatically curtail energy in response to electric grid emergencies.
Marine Military Academy will curtail electricity automatically on demand using pre-defined curtailment scenarios utilizing Vedero Software. By committing to reduce electric load from the grid in emergency situations, Marine Military Academy is providing immediate relief to the grid as a clean alternative to running stand-by power generators, as well as helping to reduce the need for more power plants. In exchange for its participation, Marine Military Academy will receive compensation through several demand response programs. With just 10 minutes notification prior to a demand response event, intelligent automation is essential to ensure that the load is curtailed as committed, while still considering the needs of the students and faculty in the 18 buildings across the 142-acre campus.
